Monroe Family Farms, established in 1936 by Lester Monroe in Weld County, is one of the oldest sustainable farms in Colorado. Now run by fourth-generation farmer Kyle Monroe, the farm raises ecologically grown melons and vegetables on nearly 200 acres in Kersey, Colorado and operates the state's oldest operating CSA program, delivering seasonal produce throughout the Front Range and Denver metro area. They do not use synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. This year they are celebrating their 90th anniversary! They have been using the same growing techniques since the farm's inception.
Their fall and winter CSA delivers weekly from mid-October to mid-December, with pickup at sites across the Front Range from Fort Collins to Centennial. Order farm products from their online store anytime, and find them at the Boulder County Farmers Markets Winter Market in Longmont, December 5 and 6.
About 60 acres are being used to grow vegetables, while the rest is used for growing alfalfa and rearing animals, such as cattle, sheep, pigs, and a (somewhat useless, in their words) llama.
